Ever feel like you just need to get out – out of your head, out of your routine, out of the relentless scroll of daily life? (Yep, that was a rhetorical question!) Enter Roam Club, the UAE’s newest walking and hiking community designed for wild hearts and wandering souls.
Founded by Carmel Harrison and Sharon Drugan, two friends and freelancers who swapped solo screen time for soul-filling walks, Roam Club is more than just a hiking group – it’s a movement (literally!). So whether you’re craving connection, fresh air, or just an excuse to step away from your laptop, Roam Club is here to help you Roam Wild, Roam Free, and importantly, Roam Together.
We caught up with the founders to hear about their journey, the magic of walking, and why you should probably lace up your sneakers and join them. (I know I will be!)
“We started Roam Club because, as freelancers, life can get pretty lonely. Long hours, working solo, staring at screens – it’s easy to feel disconnected. But both of us grew up surrounded by rolling fields and endless greenery, where being outside was just a way of life. We found ourselves craving that feeling again – the freedom, the fresh air, the space to breathe. Every time we took a walk, we felt lighter, calmer, and more inspired. It became more than just exercise; it was a reset, a way to reconnect – not just with nature, but with ourselves and each other. That’s when it hit us: what if we turned these walks into something bigger? A space for others to roam, to find their own sense of freedom, and to build a real community. So here we are, launching Roam Club – a place to Roam Wild, Roam Free, Roam Together.”
No two Roam Club walks are the same, but there’s one thing you can count on – good vibes and great company.
“Expect a welcoming, laid-back atmosphere. We start with a brief intro so everyone feels at ease, and from there, it’s all about being present. Some walks are slow and reflective, others are more energetic. You might find yourself in a deep conversation, experiencing a moment of silence, or even hugging a tree (yes, really). We’ve also hosted walks with sound healing and post-walk meals – it’s all about creating a space where people can connect in ways that feel natural and nourishing.”
And if you’re worried about whether you’ll keep up, don’t be. Roam Club is designed for everyone, from casual strollers to seasoned hikers.
“We grade our walks as easy, moderate, or difficult, so there’s something for everyone. We also have family-friendly walks that are perfect for little ones. It’s really not about speed or endurance – it’s all about the experience.”
Science backs what we already know – walking is good for your brain. But Roam Club takes it a step further by weaving mindfulness and reflection into their outings.
“We encourage people to pause, breathe, and engage their senses – listening to nature, feeling the ground beneath them, soaking in the surroundings. Whether it’s a quiet moment of reflection or an open conversation, walking allows us to process our thoughts in a way that feels effortless. It’s meditation in motion.”
For Carmel and Sharon, what started as a simple desire to walk more has turned into something far more meaningful.
“Creating this community has completely transformed our well-being. Seeing people connect – whether it’s through shared stories, laughter, or just the simple act of moving together – has been beyond rewarding. We’re reminded every day that we thrive when we lift each other up.”
Feeling a little nervous about showing up solo? Totally normal. But here’s why you should come anyway:
“We get it – putting yourself out there can feel daunting. But we promise, you won’t regret it. Roam Club is full of welcoming, like-minded people who were once new, too. You don’t have to go alone. Take that first step (literally!), and you just might find new friendships, new perspectives, and a new favorite way to unwind.”
Ready to roam? Roam Club’s walks are announced regularly on their website and social media page, so keep an eye out for upcoming meetups. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for an easy escape into nature, all are welcome.
