Joali Being is in a league of its own – easily one of my favourite destinations in the Maldives.
Just a 40-minute seaplane ride from Malé (with the option of a shared or private transfer), this wellness retreat redefines both luxury and holistic healing. The island itself is breathtaking, but it’s the villas that steal the show – undoubtedly in my top 10 hotel rooms of all time. Designed by a female visionary with an impeccable eye for detail, these spaces exude effortless elegance, with airy interiors, dreamy linens, and thoughtful touches throughout. (I have a particular soft spot for a well-designed bathroom – ample vanity space and perfectly placed hooks are the kind of details that make all the difference!)
For the ultimate experience, I always recommend a water villa. Suspended over the lagoon, they offer a deep sense of privacy and tranquillity, complete with an expansive deck and a private infinity pool. The uninterrupted ocean views make it an idyllic setting – perfect for sunrise yoga, an afternoon with a book, or an Aperol at sunset.
What truly sets Joali Being apart is its transformative approach to wellness, rooted in the Four Pillars: Mind, Skin, Microbiome, and Energy. This philosophy seamlessly blends ancient wisdom with modern science, guiding guests through an immersive, restorative journey. The spa is exceptional – one of the best I’ve ever experienced – offering personalised wellbeing programmes tailored to everything from deep relaxation and stress recovery to digestive resets, preventive skincare, energy replenishment, and yoga enhancement. One standout for me was the sound healing session – an unforgettable experience that resonated on both a physical and emotional level. Beyond the spa, Joali Being boasts one of the most impressive hotel gyms I’ve ever seen.
The culinary experience here is just as well-considered. Health-conscious menus align with the retreat’s wellness philosophy, with Flow – the signature restaurant – offering a diverse selection catering to all dietary preferences. And while Joali Being doesn’t explicitly promote alcohol, you can absolutely sip a cocktail by the pool if you wish.
As for the best time to visit? Traditionally, November to April offered the most predictable weather, but recent shifts mean February to May now bring the most consistent sunshine. If you prefer a quieter escape and lower rates, consider the summer months – occasional short showers are common, but they pass quickly. And for those longer rainy spells? They’re the perfect excuse to retreat to the spa for some much-needed indulgence.
I promise, after a stay at Joali Being, you’ll feel like you’re floating off the island – completely nourished, restored, and renewed.
