(With a few recommendations from you – our amazing community)
Hair shedding. It happens to the best of us. Whether it’s post-baby, after a stressful season, a big move, or honestly we just don’t know why. When you’re seeing more hair in your brush (or the shower drain) than you’d like, it can feel a bit disheartening.
This has been happening to me more than I feel comfortable with at the moment (thank goddess I have a lot of hair), so I wanted to get to the bottom of it and support myself as best as I could.
I put a question box out on Instagram and asked what’s helped you most when it comes to shedding hair, and here’s the round-up. From smart supplements to surprising lifestyle swaps, these are the top products and tips you’ve been loving – and that I’ve also taken a closer look at and started to take myself.
This biotin supplement came up again and again, and it’s something I started taking a few weeks ago. Biogena’s formulation is clean, high-quality, and includes supporting nutrients for optimal absorption (which not all biotin supplements do). Several of you said it helped with both shedding and nail strength, and it’s often recommended by nutritionists for a reason.
It’s easy to see why this one is a crowd favourite. It combines iodine and zinc – two key players in thyroid and hair health – and has earned plenty of rave reviews (thanks to its influencer marketing). But it is worth noting it’s missing a couple of big hitters: iron and biotin. For some people, that may be enough. For others, layering with additional support could be key.
These mushroom-powered gummies are not only a joy to take (honestly, they taste amazing), but they’re packed with Tremella, known for supporting hydration and skin elasticity. That includes the skin on your scalp – aka your hair’s growing ground. A fun, wellnessy addition to your routine that might just make a difference. (use code KATIEGRAY to save 10%)
Not a supplement, but a true hero product. K18 helps reverse damage at a molecular level, restoring strength and smoothness to your hair while you work on the internal side of things. If shedding has left your hair feeling weak or fragile, this is a solid addition to your haircare arsenal. There’s a reason it features on the people-in-the-know’s list.
The mineral-heavy water in the UAE can be incredibly harsh on both your scalp and hair. Chlorine, calcium and other nasties can dry things out and exacerbate shedding. A good-quality shower filter can help reduce the impact and support healthier growth from the root up. Hello Klean and Pure Blue tend to be the top two brands that come up.
Iron deficiency is one of the most common causes of hair shedding, particularly for women. If you haven’t checked your levels recently, it’s 100% worth doing. If your iron is low, SiderAL Forte came up several times as a favourite. It’s gentle on the stomach, highly absorbable, and can make a noticeable difference in both hair and energy levels. This is my go-to iron supplement and I’ve been taking it on and off for the past year.
Hair shedding isn’t always caused by just one thing. It’s usually a mix of stress, hormones, deficiencies, and external factors – which is why tackling it often means a combination approach.
Start with the basics (blood tests (TCC25 with Valeo for 25% off), a nutrient-rich diet, stress management), and add in targeted support where needed.
And remember: consistency is key. Most supplements or routines need at least 8 to 12 weeks to show results.
